“Gearin’ up for Desert Daze” w/ Kim and The Created

IMG_8361-1Garage rawkers Kim and The Created will perform at the 4th annual Desert Daze on May 2nd…

…so Free Bike Valet and MINIVAN Photography recently hung out with frontwoman Kim House at Lolipop Records and her Echo Park apartment to shoot some pics and ask some questions as she prepped for the music fest.

Where do all of your infamous stage costumes come from?

“I imagined wearing one and my mother actually found my first one online. I’ve borrowed some from my drummer who is also a costume designer. I create a lot of them and the others I buy in vintage stores. I always look for the most shocking material. I have tons of ideas I want to do still –including space pattern and fire. I try to wear a new one for each show. My Desert Daze costume is going to be handmade and very different than anything else I’ve worn before.”
What’s in your band merch?
“We currently have limited edition tour poster t-shirts, band logo image by MINIVAN [Photography] t-shirts, our tapes from Burger [Records] and Lolipop Records, and CDs. Also pins with many different logos by different artists and brand new tote bags with our brand new band logo on it! The bestsellers are the tapes and the pins of each of the bandmates on them.
Are your stage costumes for sale?
“I haven’t sold a stage costume. I plan to keep them.”
How did you react when you were asked to perform Desert Daze this year?
“I was really excited and actually kind of shocked. I played the first Desert Daze on drums for another band. I co-booked and presented the first ever Beyond The Witching Hour and have worked in film, production, and promotions for Desert Daze for years. But to be asked to play with my own band was really special. Especially with the long history and finally being on the stage with my own thing.”
To you, what does Desert Daze represent?
“It is personal and special to me because of my long history with the festival. I’ve seen it grow and been on so many sides of it. I’m really proud to be a part of it.”
How are you preparing for the fest?
“I am planning my costume. Making new merch. Thinking of new designs for pins. Teaching new band members parts. Thinking of how to grow as a band constantly. Always trying to be creative! Excited to be there and see everyone play and camp. We leave for tour the following day and I learned from last tour: Pack light!”
What can we expect from your set on May 2nd?
“I always try to top my last show and push myself further. I aim to shock people while expressing every dark and personal emotion I have for everyone… to get it out and to show others not to give a fuck!”
