“BTS” Video Number One w/ Fiona Grey (Premiere)

image010Preceding her new single’s (“What You Want”) release on August 5th, the realiably lovely popster Fiona Grey has decided to share a short series of “BTS” (or “behind the scenes”) videos. Grey explains:

“These videos were shot at my home by Jancarlo Beck very casually; two friends talking about my release and the things that inspire me. I was preparing to play the Troubadour alongside Kitten and it would surprise me at how there would be times I would forget I was being filmed. I want these videos to give my fans a small insight into my private life and to show them my creative process because without them these experiences wouldn’t matter.”

“Runaways” by Stephen Bradley

IMG_1355Stephen Bradley has had an amazing career as No Doubt‘s faithful trumpeter/keyboardist, but he decided to impress us again by releasing his first solo EP Runaways. The Oakland native claims the four songs were inspired by the “transient and frenetic energy of Hollywood” after moving to the outlandish neighborhood. And thanks to help from co-producer Javan Slagle, Bradley was able to capture a smooth, modern amalgam of glitch pop, soulwave, and neo-jazz such as on the title track:

“Yeah I like the way it feels…”

“I Was Born” by Ghost Lit Kingdom (Premiere)

photo_42121Ghost Lit Kingdom is a quintet of South Bay kids who aptly label their sound as “anthemic indie rock.” What began as an acoustic side project soon became a collective of solid musicians focused on creating a natural, melodic collaboration of acoustic sonics, intertwining coed vocals, and an epic swirl of passion. And once again they deliver with their latest leaked single “I Was Born.”

“Push the soul away.”

Ghost Lit Kingdom will perform on July 30th at The Troubadour.

“One Last Love Song (So He Says)” by Padorr

Press Pic 1Padorr is a young cat chilling in Venice Beach and creating a dope fusion of jazz guitar, trip-hop beats, and indie soul croons (all à la G. Love & Special Sauce). His latest leaked single, “One Last Love Song (So He Says),” is off his forthcoming debut EP, Digital Antique, (dropping July 31st via Javi Records) and opens with a steady stroll of strums, scats, and snares before starting a deep, reflective confession.

“Tryin’ to live with devils no more.”

“Tether” Music Video by Sleep State (Premiere)

SLEEP STATE PRESS 2Sleep State is a new Silver Lake-based indie rock act fronted by the very talented Troy Ritchie. Their forthcoming self-titled debut EP was sporadically recorded late at night in a small space behind a karate studio. The result is five tracks of unabashed, optimistic groove pop. And as long as they can make you dance or smile, we think they’ll feel triumphant. Here’s their second single “Tether.”

“Forget all that you knew.”

And here’s the single’s music video which is split between the band hitting up their favorite local spots in Silver Lake (where they snagged a table at Hyperion Public) and performing in an old high rise building off Skid Row:

Sleep State continues their July residency at The Silverlake Lounge tonight (July 20th) and will perform the Wednesday night residency at Los Globos in September.

“Queen Of France” by Royal

17 (1)When Imad-Roy El-Amine isn’t spinning as one half of SoySauce, he’s making “conscious pop” as Royal. The Silver Lake denizen recently leaked his new single, “Queen Of France,” as a follow-up to his debut EP Cycles. The track opens with minimal synth notes, sharp percussion effects, and a crooning vox until the sporadic, beatcentric indie pop production pounds it all into a high BPM outro. Absolutely serene-cum-vigor.

“We’re staring at the same old stars.”

Royal will perform on August 1st at Hard Summer Music Festival.

“Small Problems” by The Bulls

unnamedDon’t call them a side project, but The Bulls consists of Anna Bulbrook of The Airborne Toxic Event (and sometimes Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes) and Marc Sallis of The Duke Spirit. The coed duo first met while on tour and decided to collaborate after bonding over their mutual love of ’80s new wave and ’90s shoegaze. Their second single, “Small Problems,” is the title track of their debut EP (dropping August 28th via Diet Pink Records) and leads with an ominous aura which is soon shook-up by an edgy, indie rock blast and Bulbrook’s crystalline vox.

“You’ve got to change your heart.”

The Bulls will begin their August residency at The Satellite on August 3rd.

“Big Glass House” by Quilici

quilici1Quilici returns by collaborating again with producer Cary Singer (of Nite Swim) for his new upbeat single “Big Glass House.” The track is built on sharp keys, smooth synths, echoing guitars, and snappy beats which each flirt then collectively punch for a solid pop-hit chorus.

“It’ll be summer forever, and ever, in my big glass house.”

“As A Bell” by Ofelia K.

Ofelia K. - As A Bell (Press)Ofelia K. recently leaked her second single, “As A Bell,” off her forthcoming debut EP, Heart, dropping August 25th via South By Sea. The Box Canyon-dwelling singer-songwriter (and former vocalist of Wanderhouse) once again shows off her uncanny ability to play with pop without getting stuck in bubblegum kitsch. But this also could be attributed to the track’s producer: Doctor Rosen Rosen.

“A little voice was yelling, but I blocked it out.”
